To ensure maximum safety and reliability, it is recommended that you check the wheel bearings frequently, regardless of the age of the vehicle - look out for early warning signs of wear in the bearings: these include any friction noises when turning or unusual deceleration of the suspension combination wheel when cornering. For rear-wheel drive vehicles it is recommended that the front wheel bearings be lubricated when the vehicle reaches 38,000 kilometers. When replacing the brake system, inspect the bearings and replace the oil seals.

If you hear a murmur coming from the wheel bearing area, first, it is important to find where the murmur is occurring. There are a number of moving parts that may be generating the noise, and there may also be some rotating parts that are in contact with non-rotating parts. If the noise is confirmed to be in the bearing, the bearing may be damaged and need to be replaced.

Because the operating conditions that lead to bearing failure on both sides of the front hub are similar, it is recommended that bearings be replaced in pairs, even if only one bearing is damaged.

Wheel bearings are sensitive and require the use of correct methods and appropriate tools in all cases. The parts of the bearing must not be damaged during storage, transportation and installation. Some bearings require greater pressure to be pressed in, so specialized tools are needed, always refer to the car manufacturing instructions.

The bearings should be installed in a clean and tidy environment, fine particles entering the bearings will also shorten the service life of the bearings. It is very important to keep the clean part when replacing the bearings. It is not permitted to strike the bearings with a hammer, and care should be taken that the bearings do not fall on the ground or similarly mishandled. The condition of the shaft and housing should also be checked before mounting. Even minor wear can lead to a poor fit, which can cause early bearing failure.

For wheel bearing units, do not attempt to disassemble the wheel bearings or adjust the seals of the wheel unit, as damage to the seals could result in the ingress of water or dirt.

The seals containing the ABS unit bearings contain a magnetic thrust ring that cannot be subjected to collision, impact or other magnetic fields. Remove them from the box prior to installation to keep them away from magnetic fields such as electric motors or power tools used. When installing these bearings, change the operation of the bearings by observing the ABS warning needle on the dashboard during a road test.

Wheel bearings fitted with ABS magnetic thrust rings, to determine which side the thrust ring is fitted to, hold a small, light object close to the edge of the bearing and the magnetism generated by the bearing will attract it. Install with the side with the magnetic ring pointing inward, directly toward the sensitive element of the ABS. NOTE: Incorrect installation may cause the brake system to malfunction.

Many bearings are sealed, these bearings do not need to be greased throughout their life. Other bearings that are not sealed such as double row tapered roller bearings must be lubricated with grease when mounted. It is difficult to determine how much grease to add because the inner cavities of the bearings are of different sizes, the most important thing is to ensure that there is grease in the bearings. If there is too much grease, the excess will seep out when the bearings are rotating. General experience: when mounting, the total amount of grease should be 50% of the clearance of the bearing.

The amount of torque varies greatly when installing the lock nut due to the type of bearing and bearing housing. Take care to refer to the relevant instructions.
